Best Way to Start Scuba Diving?

My husband and I are interested in scuba diving during a trip to Jamaica this summer. Is it better to get certified before we go there or to do it when we are there? If we do it while we are there how long does it take and how expensive is it usually? Is it even necessary to have a certification?

For Scuba diving, I personally would take it here, but it has been said it is okay to take open water course outside of our borders., though Jamaica would not have been our choice.

    That being said:

There are other places, too, but since I don’t know where you are staying, here is the search site:

My husband and I are open water, water rescue, and cave divers. I highly recommend paying attention in classes and don’t make your first few dives deep dives.

I love diving and you will enjoy yourselves, too! One of the best reasons to get certified first, is you have more time for fun when you get there!

Check out http://www.padi.com….YES re the question of necessary to have a certification. I guess it depends on how much time you have in Jamaica to do the lessons. Be Careful!

In my opinion it is better to get certified before going, because you will learn more that way,and have more time enjoying yourself. Than trying to learn it all while on vacation. And yes it is necessary to be certified, for many different reasons.(i’m an old scuba instructor). Enjoy yourself.

I highly suggest that you take your classes here. Even though PADI requirements are "usually" met in other countries, the U.S. is much more strict at making sure the students understand all aspects of diving. When it comes down to it, it’s "YOUR" safety at risk, is it worth it??
Better to be safe, than sorry.
The whole idea of diving is enjoying the under sea world, and doing it as safe as possible is key!
