Diving the SETT

On the 11th November 2006, my buddy Craig and I dived the Submarine Escape Training Tube (SETT) at HMS Blockhouse, Gosport. 30 meters deep and as warm as a swimming pool. It feels a bit like being in “The Abyss”!

    SETT stands for Submarine Escape Training Tank.
    This tank is used to train how to ditch a submarine without any air. Basically exhaling all the way up so you don’t die from air expanding inside of you.

    Yeah, it’s the build up of pressure on your inner ear. Although you can’t see it on the video, as we decend we’ll hold our noses occasionally and gently blow through them to equalise the pressure – Usually before it starts to hurt!

    My recollection of doing SETT passed a hell of a lot quicker than this video!! but i did it from bottom to top though. I did it a number of times during the 80′s from 10mts, 20mts and 32mts and from 32mts to the top only took about 8 – 10 seconds. now that is a rush!

    do you take a big breath before the ascent then blow it out as your coming up? your doing it from 30m what if the sub is at 200m or beyond what happens then?

    No, it isn´t Nemo. This one has 25 meters Deep. Nemo has 33 meters, many levels, a little cave and it is larger.

    When I dived it, it was 30m deep :-)

    But no, it’s not as deep as Nemo33. Or as much fun I’d guess, as Nemo is purpose built for recreational diving and the SETT isn’t.

    That part is what scared my from
    Scuba diving. I might brave it someday and go to the ocean.

    @mrchristiangoodall

    It’s in Gosport, south east England. Do a search for “sett portsmouth” in Google and it should come up with the website.

    Sadly, I don’t think they allow recreational divers to use it any more :-(

    The SETT (Submarine Emergency Tratining Tank) in Gosport is no longer open to the public. Up until recently it was used a lot by the Free Diving clubs as its the only indoor 30m warm water pool in the UK.

    In answer to a previous question the “tanks” are actually two air lock hatchs at the bottom which are for the the submarines escape training (which is what the tower was built for).
