Does Any One Else Dumpster Dive?

Been dumpster diving for awhile now. Mostly electronics places. They throw away such useful things! I have built entire computers out of parts I have found. As well as T.vs/monitors. So my question is this. Does anyone else dumpster dive? or know of places that may have worthy dumpsters? What have you found?

Use the link below to find one or more Freecycle groups that are active in your area. There are nearly 5000 local groups worldwide. It costs absolutely nothing to join and participate. You can get all kinds of useful stuff (some working, some in need of repair) before it hits the dumpster. You can also share the wealth by giving away things you no longer need.

Back in my salad days, yes.

Once I found a stack of microprocessor boards with PROMs in them. Both the microprocessor chips and the PROMs were in sockets and brought a nice little bit of change on the surplus market.

not me, but i have lived in communities that require dumpsters to be padlocked to prevent the practice. some stores/manufactures don’t handle electric product returns, they just cut the power cords and toss rather than send to a refurb center. its wasteful and not very green. so some of the dumpster stuff is as good as new because the return may not have been for a defect.

I sure do. Mostly in the dumpster in the industrial park where I have my shop. I can’t even tell you how many things I have gotten out of it. It’s amazing what people will throw out. This week I got a DVD recorder / player, a DVD player and a combo VCR/DVD player. Only the combo unit had a problem. The other two work perfectly. The more notable finds in the past are a Danelectro guitar amplifier that is worth several hundred $ to a collector (I re-tubed it and gave it to a guitar collector friend) and a Griswold dutch oven with a similar value on the collector market. I don’t seek this stuff out though. I stick to the one dumpster, mostly noticing stuff when I toss the trash. Sometimes I’ll see things set outside dumpsters elsewhere. I picked up quite a bit of knotty pine lumber that way a few months ago which I turned into raised garden beds.

I found a 1979 Panasonic Ranger portable television, and my friends and I have found motherboards, sticks of RAM graphics cards, a mouse or two, keyboards, office chairs, a kitchen chair, a console TV, lap top cases…I also go with my brother a lot too.

    Wait you are my brother.

So you already know all this stuff you were there.
