Fiji – Diving With the Bulls

We travel to Benqa Island, Fiji, with the main aim of diving with the bull shark. This species is known to enter fresh water bodies, including rivers and estuaries. The bull shark has one of the highest testosterone levels in the animal kingdom, and it is notorious for being aggressive. As seen in this trailer, however, the reputation of the bull shark, like other predatory sharks, is wildly exaggerated. Besides the shark dive Benqa lagoon also offer som exceptionally beautiful diving in coral gardens.

    Beautiful.
Try Jupiter FL most of the year but especially in June and July. You can have 10 or more all over you! No feeding required.

@Fox485Fire – I was using two UK Cannon 100 lights. Contrast and colors were enhanced in Adobe Premiere Pro.

@3117ss -Are you fair dinkum or what? You recon the vis was murky. Mate you must dive swimming pools or be a real soft diver. Do some cold and temperate water dives and you will probably change your mind about what bad or murky vis actually is.

Whats better for diving, Egypt Red Sea or Fiji?

  15. DanBach69
    March 7th, 2011 at 06:57 | #15

Hi @bimbus111, both places are well worth a visit. Living in Europe the Red Sea is more accessible to me and if you want to dive with oceanic whitetip sharks and theresher sharks the Red Sea is the place to go. If you want to dive with bull sharks and prefer a more tropical feel, then Fiji is the place to go. Both places have beatiful corals.

    Cheers

Dan, im heading over to Beqa next month and will be taking my L&M rig along with me. Was wonderig about the set up there in regards to the shark feeding.

are the observing divers standing upright or lying flat on the ground?
also, is the ledge where the observing divers slightly higher than where the feeding happens (ie ur filming downwards if a shark comes in low) ?

i am thinking of taking down a small tripod for my housing , get some nice stable shots….what u think ?

@sultanik420, generally divers are upright on their knees during the shark feed. There were two dive operators, Beqa Adventure Divers (BAD) and Beqa Divers. BAD does the shark feed on a ledge, where you tend to shoot downwards, whereas Beqa Divers feed on a more level, flat area, where you shoot straight. This of course may have changed since I visited Beqa. I am not sure a tripod is ideal, since there is a lot of action and movement. A steady hand and a good wide angle lens should do the job.

Gorgeous place, nicecamera work. Even in this delicate wonderland, there’s always some idiot diver standing on the reef (3:24).
