I got my open water certification about 6 years ago. Yes, I’d highly recommend it. The ocean is a different world. I’ve been diving on the Great Barrier Reef and also in Indonesia.
I just wish human beings would stop destroying it so quickly. Promise us, if you start diving, be a responsible diver. Don’t touch coral, don’t take coral, don’t stand on it, don’t feed fish, don’t harass other sea life, don’t throw garbage in the water, etc. Be a steward and try to protect it as well as enjoy it. You get the idea.
Good luck.
YES YES AND YES….you will get to see things when you go diving that not many people get to see first hand
It is SOOOO worth it. Its one of my very favorite things to do! Its simply beautiful, and fun, and just plain cool to breath underwater! Really, go for it!
absolutely! it is like nothing else you could do on earth.
It certainly is for some people and not for others. The best and cheapest way for you to find out if it’s for you is to contact a local PADI dive shop. Arrange to take their Discover Scuba course. It’s free. You’ll get some basic training in the use of the gear and about 30 minutes of pool time to try it out. If you like it ( no claustrophobia issues etc) then sign up for an Open water course. If you get freaked out ( some people find out this way) by having water over your head and breathing, then you won’t have spent any money. My ex wife had to go this route. Fortunately it didn’t cost me a dime to find out she can be a ballistic missile shooting out of a pool in a panic. Some people just have that fear.
If you decide to continue diving and do it regularly, you’ll be part of an amazing bunch of people from all walks of life. You’ll be surprised at who dives. That meek chartered accountant with the coke bottle eyeglasses behind a desk all day could be technical diver on the weekends, penetrating wrecks. ( I happen to dive with a guy, just like this). Or a stay at home Mom, that cruises a reef looking for sharks. It’s very much a social scene too. There are many dive clubs out there. If you’re into being an environmentalist, bingo…we all are. Many clubs organize underwater clean ups called enviro dives to keep areas pristine. You’d be shocked to see what gets tossed in rivers, lakes and oceans. Sometimes it’s valuable too boot.
For me. Worth it. I dive for a living and thoroughly enjoy my underwater office. I also enjoy diving recreationaly any time I get the chance. I’m a wreck nut.
